Description

The lodges and arched gateway to Dyrham Park date from around 1790 to 1800 and are designed in a monumental Neo-classical style. They are constructed from stuccoed brick with stone dressings, and the lodges feature slate roofs. The entrance arch is notable for its two attached Tuscan columns that support an entablature. Atop the arch is a sarcophagus-like block adorned with festoons and a central roundel, all topped by an urn. The spandrels of the arch include paterae.

Half-height link walls connect the arch to the square lodges and are pierced by round-headed entrances. Each lodge has window architraves on all sides, featuring scrolled bracketed pediments, although some are damaged and all are currently blocked. A continuous stringcourse runs from the impost level of the central arch to the top of the link walls, reaching the cornice level of the window architraves. The lodges have a cornice below the eaves level and pyramidal roofs with central chimneys. Iron gates are stored on the site.
