Description
Dancers Hill House is a large house built around 1750-1760, with alterations made around 1820 and further extensions and remodeling around 1860 and later. It was constructed for Charles Ross and features a stuccoed brick exterior and a slate roof, designed in an elongated Palladian style. The original entrance front has three storeys and five bays, arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, with a slightly projecting central feature.
The ground floor has an open triple arcade with a groin vault, while the principal floor showcases an attached Roman Doric order. Pilaster strips emphasize the center, extending through the cornice to the parapet. Two bays were added to the right and five to the left. The house has glazing bar sashes throughout, with a false window located right of center on the second floor. The ground floor to the right and the first floor to the left of the central bays feature early 18th century ovolo moulded thick glazing bars. A plat band separates the two lower storeys, and there is a continuous timber modillion eaves cornice below the parapet. The house has four cross axial stacks and a left end stack, while the right return wall includes a French window in an aedicular surround.
The garden front consists of eight bays and two storeys, with a basement that was banked up in the early 19th century. The three central bays of the original villa project slightly under a pediment, and there are glazing bar sashes throughout. A panelled door to the right is flanked by side and top lights, and the far right three bays are set back, featuring a ground floor lean-to conservatory in front.
Inside, the principal floor has a saloon behind the triple arcade, which likely led to an open loggia behind the original portico. To the left, there is a timber pergola linking to a brick store cottage with a hipped slate roof, which is two storeys high and features dentilled brick courses, along with later extensions. The 18th century grounds are laid out with an avenue to the north.
