Lodges And Gateway, Cramond House, Kirk Cramond, Cramond, Edinburgh

The lodges and gateway at Cramond House in Kirk Cramond, Edinburgh, date from around 1790 and were restored around 1960. These single-storey, square-plan classical lodges are positioned on either side of a central semi-circular arch with a pediment, featuring pilasters on the outer left and right. The arch is made of polished ashlar sandstone, while the lodges are constructed from droved ashlar. They include a continuous base course, a moulded string course with a cornice, and a coped parapet above. Decorative carved roundels with inset foliate detail are symmetrically placed.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there are modern two-leaf boarded timber gates set within the central pedimented voussoir-arch. Flanking spandrels feature roundels, and a smaller single roundel is centered in the tympanum above. The structure is topped with a single ashlar stack and cornice, along with a circular can. Round-arched timber panelled shutters cover the single windows at ground level in the outer left and right bays, which have iron hinges. The elevation also includes a plain frieze, cornice, and roundels aligned above the pilasters in the outer bays.
