Description

The gateway and lodges to Haigh Hall Park, located on Wigan Lane, date from around 1840 and have been altered over time. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the structures feature slate roofs on the lodges and decorative cast-iron railings and gates. The design follows a linear plan, with a tall round-headed archway connecting square lodges through short sections of railings.

The archway is framed by pilasters and corner pilasters, topped with an entablature that includes a plain frieze and a moulded cornice with a blocking course. A large cast-iron lamp bracket hangs from the soffit of the arch, and there are elaborately-moulded cast-iron gates. Each side of the archway is linked to the lodges by matching railings, with a pedestrian gate in the center.

The square lodges are single-storey with cut-out corners and consist of one bay. They feature a cavetto plinth, plain frieze, moulded cornice with a blocking course, and a low pyramidal roof with a central chimney. Each lodge has a rectangular recess in the front and rear walls, framed by set-in Tuscan columns around a doorway; the front doorways are both blocked, with one on the right having a damaged door covering internal blocking. The side walls of each lodge contain two narrow windows; the lodge on the left has blocked windows, while the lodge on the right has windows covered by 20th-century wooden shutters.
