Description

The Elms is a villa that now serves as Health Authority offices and a nursing school. It was built around 1820 to 1840 and has been altered since its construction. The building is made of red brick in English garden wall bond, featuring a sandstone plinth and dressings, topped with a hipped slate roof.

This double-depth, double-fronted main range has a large service wing at the rear and is designed in the late Georgian style. It stands two storeys high with cellars, displaying a symmetrical façade with two windows on each side of a central one that slightly projects forward. The exterior includes a plinth, a first-floor sill band, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course that steps up in the centre.

A square porch with Tuscan columns and pilasters supports a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a lead-clad blocking course. The square-headed doorway features 20th-century double doors and a deep four-pane overlight. The building has unhorned 12-pane sashed windows on both floors, each with wedge lintels. There are also a pair of ridge chimneys flanking the centre, and the return sides have generally similar window arrangements. A 20th-century garage is now attached to the right-hand corner. The rear service wing is three storeys tall and matches the height of the main building.

Inside, there is a doglegged staircase with two elaborate cast-iron balusters per tread. In the front left room, there is a good moulded plaster cornice featuring bead-and-reel, stiff-leaf, and scrolled foliated enrichment, although the rest of the interior has been altered.
