Description
Mab's Cross is a boundary cross stump, likely from the 13th century, which was moved to its current location from the opposite side of the road, probably in the early 20th century. It is made of gritstone and features a square plinth consisting of two courses of large rectangular blocks that were formerly secured by metal staples. On top of this plinth is a large square cross-base with the stump of a chamfered shaft set into it. Attached to the front of the plinth is a metal plaque that recounts the well-known legend of Lady Mabel Bradshaigh, who, in 1323, did penance for bigamy by walking barefoot from Haigh Hall to this cross once a week for the rest of her life.
