Description
The railway bridge in Haigh Hall Park was built between 1883 and 1884 by Charles Badlock to span the Whelley Loop Line. It is constructed of pinkish-red brick with ashlar facings on the abutments and ashlar plinths. The bridge features a cast-iron undercarriage and balustrade, with three straight-headed arches supported by 13 girders in the undercarriage. The abutments are adorned with pilasters, a frieze, and moulded modillion cornices, topped with plinths that have a chamfered base, cavetto and roll moulding, and pyramidal caps, interspersed with stretches of balustrade. The balustrade is approximately 30 meters long and includes a round-arched arcade on columns with scalloped bases and chamfered copings. The ends of the balustrade are curved, featuring end plinths, all of which have moulded cornices and blocking courses. This bridge is located within Haigh Hall Park, which was previously listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at grade II but was removed from the Register on September 30, 1999.
