Description

Six almshouses were built between 1864 and 1865 for the Brewer's Company. They are constructed of red brick with white brick detailing, and have a tiled roof. The buildings form a symmetrical, single-story terrace. Each of the six almshouses has a paired entrance beneath a gabled roof, with plank doors set within 4-centred arched surrounds of chamfered white brick. Tiled pentice canopies provide shelter above the entrances. The gables are stone-coped with kneelers; the central gable bears the Arms of Platt. The windows are cross casements with white brick detailing to their flat arched heads. A plinth is present, and an overhanging course of white brick is visible at the eaves. A horizontal band of blue tiles runs along the roof, and there are two ridge stacks, each with four octagonal shafts, and end stacks with two such shafts. Stone-coped gable end parapets include kneelers, and the Arms of Platt are displayed on plaques on the gable ends. Small rear extensions have been added. The almshouses were built in place of earlier buildings dating back to a foundation of 1528 by R. Platt, who also founded Aldenham School. The buildings are principally listed for their historical significance and association with this foundation. The interior has not been inspected.
