Description

This is a barn with an attached byre located about 20 meters southwest of Nicoll Farmhouse in Elstree. It dates back to the 17th century, with extensions from the 19th century and alterations made in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame that is weatherboarded and has tiled roofs. The barn consists of four bays with 19th-century extensions, three similar bays to the west, and a brick section to the southeast. There is an entrance on the north side and a hipped threshing bay on the south side in the second bay from the house. An oculus is present in the east gable. The west gable has windows in a lower timber extension, which includes a lean-to addition at the front. A 18th-century door hood is set over the entrance on the brick extension.

Inside, the barn has clasped purlins, straight queen struts, and intermediate collars, with curved and arched braces connecting the wall posts to the tie beams and wall plates. The three-bay extension features re-used timbers and a clasped purlin collar beam roof. The slightly lower byre to the north has four bays, with an additional hipped bay to the north. The windows in the byre have round heads, Gothic glazing, and leaded lights, along with an 18th-century flat hood set over a door with a pointed head, all facing the house. The interior of the byre also has a clasped purlin collar beam roof, queen struts, and arched braces.
