Description

The Retreat is a building that was originally constructed as almshouses and is now a house. It dates from the 18th century and was in existence by 1788. The structure features a timber frame that is roughcast, topped with a thatched roof. It has a lobby entry and a central chimney, with a two-room plan and one and a half storeys. There are later lean-to extensions at both ends, which have red tile roofs. The modern gabled porch is roughcast and centrally located, flanked by a small two-light casement window on each side. The building also has three gabled conjoined thatched dormers, each with a two-light casement. A large red brick chimney is situated at the center of the house, which is set in a picturesque hilltop position.
