Description

The Chequers Public House is a late 17th-century building that was extended to the east and refronted in plaster in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is plastered, with a ground floor extension that is weatherboarded and made of painted brick. The building has steep old red tiled roofs and a hipped slated roof extension. It is one and a half storeys tall and faces south, displaying a symmetrical plastered front.

The central entrance consists of a glazed and panelled door set in a reeded doorcase with a moulded cornice and corner blocks. This door is flanked by flush box sash windows with six-over-six panes. There are two gabled dormers on the wallplate, each with small paned two-light casement windows. The building has a low black plinth and a name board that runs the length of the front, featuring raised block letters.

Originally, the structure was a long one and a half storeys with its end facing the road, and it had a short two-storey wing at its northwest corner. The lateral chimney serving the front part and the external gable chimney at the north end appear to be 19th-century replacements. In the early 19th century, a parallel range was added along the east side, constructed with brick outer walls and a central chimney. The road frontage was modified to create a single hipped roof and a symmetrical facade. Inside, the exposed timbers of the walls and first floor are poorly finished.
