Description
The well head gear and housing, located about 10 meters northeast of Westmill, dates from the mid to late 19th century. It features an iron and timber mechanism set on a small timber frame, with lower brick infill and a small tiled gabled head. The well head winding gear is hand operated, utilizing a large outer handle that turns a small cogwheel on the lower axle. This cogwheel engages a larger cogwheel on the upper axle, which has a central timber wheel covered with iron plates, over which the lifting rope passes.
