Description
Westmill House is a Grade II* listed house dating from the early 17th century. It has been plastered and re-windowed in a Georgian style in 1781. The building is timber-framed and lined to resemble ashlar, topped with a steep old red tile roof that features a hip at the northwest corner. This large L-shaped house faces west and consists of two storeys, a cellar, and attics. The northern wing extends to the rear and includes a stair tower at the angle.
Inside, the principal room at the south end of the west wing has a large rear fireplace, with an external lateral chimney stack that has three diamond stalks. This room used to occupy much of the entrance hall. The parlour is located at the north end of this wing and formerly extended to the south, where there is now a study. The kitchen is situated in the northeast wing, with a service room at the eastern end. There is a chimney at the junction of the wings, and the stair in the angle features an early 17th-century balustrade that survives in the attic storey.
The north elevation retains 17th-century cross-windows and has a small bellcote next to the middle first-floor window. The formal west front showcases a moulded eaves cornice, five flush box sash windows with small panes of Crown-glass, and a central six-panel fielded door with a semi-circular fanlight featuring interesting Gothic tracery. The entrance is framed by a Tuscan doorcase with attached columns and an open triangular pediment. Additionally, there is a wall painting with a Corinthian capital in the first-floor room above the kitchen.
