Description

The Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, which was raised to two storeys over the hall and parlour in the mid-17th century. A service room at the north end was also heightened to two storeys under a separate roof in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is roughcast on a stucco plinth, topped with a steep old red tile roof that steps down at the northern part. It has a three-cell plan and faces east, with a central chimney and a lobby entrance located a third of the way from the south end. The central chimney has diagonally set conjoined shafts above an irregular rectangular base with moulded capping. A hipped rear wing on the west side encloses a stair in the position of a former stair turret. The east front has three windows over two storeys, with flush casement windows that have been renewed, and a gabled porch. Inside, there are axial beams that are chamfered and stopped, exposed thin close-studding, long curved braces to the side wall and gable end on the first floor, jowled bay posts in the centre of the gable, and high-set purlins. An oven opens from the west jamb of the hall fireplace, and there is a small blocked window with a diamond mullion above the front door.
