Description

House. Dating from the early 17th century, with a recorded date of 1635, it was altered in the early 20th century. The house is timber-framed, with a red brick sill, roughcast plastering and steep red tile roofs. It is a 2-storey and attic, 2-cell plan house with a lobby-entry and a central chimney facing east. A rear wing extends to the northwest and a later extension to the southwest. The chimney stack features four conjoined square shafts set diagonally on a moulded square base. The east front is symmetrical, with two gabled dormers in the roof slope, 3-light flush casement windows on each floor to either side of a gabled open porch, and a small window above a battened central door. Windows have renewed leaded lattice glazing. The interior retains exposed close studding, joists, axial beams and straight tension bracing. Original features include an ovolo-moulded 2-light lattice window at the rear of the first floor, another on the staircase tower, a 4-centred arched brick fireplace in the parlour and chamber above, an oak staircase and doors. The roof is a 3-bay butt-purlin design with wind braces on the front slope. Jowled posts are also present. Cromer Hall served as the manor house of a sub-manor.
