Description

Old Timbers is a house dating from the early 16th century, which was remodelled around the early 17th century. It is constructed of timber frame with plaster and has a thatched roof with gabled ends. Brick gable ends and axial stacks are present. The house originally comprised three rooms in a line, with a large parlour and solar at the south end, and an open hall. A floor and stack were inserted into the hall in the early 17th century. The original service wing has been demolished, and a partition has been inserted into the parlour, creating two rooms. The house is two storeys high with an attic. The east front has an asymmetrical arrangement of four windows. It now features 20th-century 2 and 3-light casement windows, an eyebrowed half-dormer, and three small windows inserted between the studs at the right-hand end. A projecting brick stack with set-offs is located at the south end, and a 20th-century porch is situated at the north end. The rear (west) elevation also has 20th-century casement windows, along with a 20th-century French casement and an eyebrowed half-dormer. Inside, the central room (the original hall) contains a large chamfered axial beam, exposed joists from the inserted floor, and a fireplace with a large chamfered cambered timber lintel. The partition between the hall and parlour retains a rail and studs, although the infill has been removed below the rail. The parlour features a chamfered cross-beam and an inserted axial partition with close-studding. The original roof structure remains, incorporating plain chamfered crown-posts, with the one above the hall having four-way bracing.
