Description
Milburns is a house with a complex history, dating back to approximately 1500. The western part of the house is a crosswing from around 1500, while the main range was constructed in the early 17th century. A two-storey porch was added around 1920 and a two-storey rear extension in approximately 1980, with a western lean-to being rebuilt. The house has timber framing and plastered walls, covered by a steep roof of old red tiles, half-hipped and gabled over the porch.
The original T-plan late medieval house included a two-storey western crosswing, which remains. The 17th-century hall range has been re-used timbers in the roof, including smoke-blackened principal and common rafters and a hollow-chamfered tie-beam, along with a face halved bladed scarf joint in wallplates. The roof has been altered to incorporate the crosswing under a single roof.
The house now presents a symmetrical facade facing north, with one window on each floor to either side of the two-storey porch. The windows are flush casements with three lights, and there is a single window above the door. The entrance is via a six-panel door with a flat hood on a shaped bracket.
Inside, the eastern room is heated by a wide Tudor-arched fireplace with a moulded wooden lintol and sunk spandrels; access from the front lobby is provided by cutting back the fireplace. Chamfered axial beams are also present. A staircase rises behind the chimney. The western room features 18th-century panelling, a cornice, and a fireplace surround. An old plank door leads to the space under the stairs. In the crosswing, the central tie-beam and heavy, curved braces remain, along with the heavy timbered frame and jowled posts.
