Description

This is a large barn located at Milburns in Great Hormead, dating from the 17th century or early 18th century. It features a timber frame set on a tarred brick sill and is dark weatherboarded, with a roof that was originally thatched until the 1930s, now covered with corrugated iron. The barn is tall, consisting of four bays and is unaisled, facing south and backing onto the street. There are double doors in the second bay from the east, and it has a mid-height rail that is tennoned in-line. Long straight braces support the tie-beams, and the wallplate is joined with a face-halved bladed scarf joint. Knee-braces are present at the doorway, along with thin tension braces. After 1918, the barn served as a village hall. It is included in the register for its group value.
