Description
Amwell Place is a house dating from the late 18th century, with a rear wing from the early 19th century and a low rear extension added in the 20th century. It is constructed of yellow brick and features hipped slate roofs. The house is three storeys tall with a cellar and is three windows wide, set back from the road and facing east. The two-storey, two-window wide rear wing is flush with the south end of the house, and there is a single-storey building at its west end with a gable chimney, along with a low infill in the rear angle.
The symmetrical east front has a parapet and flat gauged arches over recessed sash windows with three panes each. There is a central circular gauged window on the second floor, a pointed central window with Gothick Y-tracery, and an unusual projecting square porch featuring an entablature and pilasters at the wall, which are supported by four clustered Gothic shafts with Corinthian caps. The entrance includes a six-panel, half-glazed door.
Inside, the original staircase is located at the first floor rear, featuring a column newel and a moulded handrail that leads up to the second floor. There is also a carved four-panel door and a wood chimneypiece on the second floor.
