Description
The East India College Arms Public House is a public house located on London Road in Hertford Heath. It dates back to the 17th century or earlier and has been extended forward, with a brick facade. An east wing was added and the roof was altered around 1808, featuring stucco bands and quoins. A single-storey bar was built at the front in the mid-19th century. The original timber-framed structure is weatherboarded, visible only at the west gable. The building is primarily red brick with a slate roof that overhangs at the front and east wing, showcasing a plastered soffit.
The exterior includes black stucco dressings on the plinth, floor band, eaves band, keystones, and rusticated quoins on the north and east fronts, along with paired brackets added to the eaves soffit. The building is two stories tall with a five-window front featuring gauged flat arches and recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes. In front of the right three bays is a decorative one-storey bar building made of stucco, with a hipped slate roof and brick plinth. It has central double doors flanked by two segmental bay windows. To the left, there are two panelled doors linked under a flat hood supported by reeded pilasters and stepped brackets in the Regency style. A large old lateral chimney protrudes from the back wall, and there is a red brick gable chimney at the west end.
The public house was known as The Jolly Pindar, named after a manorial official, until 1808 when the East India College (Haileybury) was established. It serves as a central feature of the village group.
