Description
The Hertford Heath War Memorial is a First World War memorial that also includes names added after the Second World War. It is made of stone and is prominently located on a green at the junction of the B1197 and Vicarage Causeway.
The memorial features a Celtic stone cross adorned with carved Celtic decoration on the ring, which is mounted on a plinth and set on a three-stepped square base. It is a replica of the cross of St Martin at Iona. On the front of the cross, just above the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORIOUS AND UNDYING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HERTFORD HEATH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The names of the fallen from the First World War are inscribed on all four faces of the plinth, listing both their forenames and surnames.
The front face of the top step of the square base bears the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS; THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The names of those who fell during the Second World War are inscribed on the sides of the second step. It is noted that the concrete platform on which the memorial stands is not original and is excluded from the listing.
