Description
The war memorial in Castle Gardens, Bishops Stortford, was constructed in 1920/21 by H.J. Chetwood for the Bishop's Stortford War Memorial Committee. It is made of ashlar and features a classical design with an obelisk set on a tall plinth, which stands on an octagonal base with four steps. The plinth is adorned with corner scrolls and side panels that are inscribed with the names of the fallen. Additional names are inscribed on sloping tablets that lean against the foot of the plinth. Surrounding the base of the obelisk are dedication panels topped with broken pediments, and at each corner, there are carved military trophies. These trophies depict items from First World War uniforms and weaponry, including an airman's goggles, gloves, and bomb; a cape and sword; a satchel, belt, and rifle; and a machine gun with ammunition. The memorial was unveiled on April 3rd, 1921, as reported in the Herts and Essex Observer on April 9th, 1921.
