Description
The remains of Waytemore Castle are a significant historical site dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. This motte and bailey castle features an earthwork mound and flint walling. The large oval motte rises 40 feet high and has the ruins of a 12th-century shell keep at its perimeter. There are remnants of chambers located in the northeast and southeast corners. To the south, the roughly pentagonal bailey is surrounded by water courses on all four sides. The area is now home to public tennis courts and gardens, which are wooded and include a grand avenue. It is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
