Description
Whitehill House is a house from the mid-17th century, which may include a late medieval crosswing on the east side. It was extended to the north in the 18th century and underwent further alterations in the early 20th century. The exterior features red brick that is plastered and incorporates a timber framework, topped with steep old red tile roofs. The house is two storeys high with attics and originally faced south. It has a central hall with a rear lateral chimney and two crosswings; the west wing was possibly jettied but has since been underbuilt, while the east wing projects and has a large external chimney on its wall. The south front includes a canted bay window in the center and three casement windows stacked above one another in each wing. The 17th-century chimneys have tall diagonally set shafts with moulded caps, and there is an 18th-century chimney serving the east wing, which has a cellar below. Inside, there are two wide brick fireplaces with 4-centred chamfered arches on the ground floor and similar plastered fireplaces on the first floor. The hall features panelled walls and a dado. A hitch-brick garden wall with flintwork panels runs along the lane.
