Description

This is a milestone located on High Cross, Standon High Road, dating from around 1742, commissioned by the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The original inscription has been covered by an iron lettered plate added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. The milestone is made of white freestone and features a cast iron front plate. It is a low square pillar measuring about 400 millimeters square and 750 millimeters high, topped with a segmental curved shape and a raised bead around the plate. The inscription on the plate reads 'LONDON/24/WARE/3/BUNTINGFORD/7', with the first and last words raised in segmental arcs.
