Description
Farmhouse at Sutes Farm is a 14th-century building originally associated with the Swote family, which has undergone alterations in the 17th century and later. It features a timber frame on a brick sill, with white weatherboarding on the south range and plaster on the north wing. The roofs are covered with old red tiles, with the south range having a half-hipped design and the north wing hipped. This two-storey T-plan house faces west, with the north and northwest sides rising directly from the moat.
The south range represents the nave and east aisle of the former aisled hall, consisting of two bays and a short screens passage to the south, while the west aisle and service rooms to the south have been demolished. On the upper floor, the posts, arcade-plates, and curved braces of the aisled construction are visible, along with a tie-beam, arched braces, and the foot of a crown-post of a spere-truss. Only the lengthwise braces to the collar purlin remain. The middle and east rooms of the north wing contain large close-set joists on a chamfered beam, supported by small brackets at each end, dating back to the 14th century.
17th-century alterations included the addition of a floor and a central chimney in the hall, as well as a kitchen chimney in the north wing. There is a west extension from around 1700 that is unheated. The fireplace and stair date from the 19th century, with the stair being renewed in an old turret in the southeast angle, and the south range is weatherboarded.
