Description
This is a disused brewery built around 1870, located immediately south-west of number 23 New Road in Ware Town. The brewery features white brick with red brick arches and a weatherboarded timber frame, topped with pantile roofs that have gabled ends. It has a rectangular plan with an entrance on the north end, which is enclosed in a 20th-century outshut. The building stands three storeys tall.
On the east elevation, there are four windows on the ground and first floors, each with cambered red brick arches. The second floor has a boarded timber frame, with the right side featuring three louvred panels and the left side having higher eaves, two windows, and a louvred ventilator on the roof ridge. The north gable end is mostly weatherboarded and has a doorway on the left side of the second floor, along with a 20th-century single-storey outshut. The south gable end is entirely made of brick and has no openings. The brickwork on the left returns to the west elevation, which has a weatherboarded second floor on the left.
Inside, the ground floor was used as a store for raw materials. The first floor contains a large galvanised iron tank fed by a pipe and tap. On the second floor, there is a brick kiln in the south-west corner, measuring approximately 6 feet by 5 feet. This brewery was operated by Henry Barker, who also ran a small alehouse at number 23 New Road with his son Silas Barker. Small-scale breweries from this period are becoming increasingly rare.
