Description

Numbers 5, 5A, 7, and 7A on New Road is a former service wing to Nos 1A, 2, 2A, and 2B East Street, now converted into four residential units. This building dates from the 18th century and has been altered in the 19th century and early 1980s. It is constructed of red brick, with the northern bay rebuilt in yellow brick. The building features a cornice band, a parapet with stone coping, and an old tiled roof. There are two outer dormers with segmental lead roofs and two inner dormers with gabled tiled roofs, all fitted with lead-glazed casement windows with rectangular quarries, which were rebuilt during the 1980s conversion.

The facade has six first-floor windows that are irregularly spaced. The leftmost window remains in the rear of No. 2 East Street, and all first-floor windows are recessed sash windows with glazing bars, set under segmental arches, and were replaced in the 1980s. The ground floor is stucco-faced below a brick plat band and has four sash windows with glazing bars under segmental arches, along with four modern six-panel doors that are recessed with plain fanlights above, all installed during the 1980s conversion. This long, narrow range is one room deep and was originally built by the Dickinson family as a service wing to their main house facing East Street. The rear elevation of the building faces Bluecoat Yard.
