Description

This is a brewery building dated 1862, constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick arches, and partly timber framed with weatherboarding. It features pantile roofs with gabled ends. The building is a tower brewery, rectangular in plan, with a prominent tower at the left (east) end. The tower incorporates an integral water tank within the louvred gable.

The north front has a large three-storey tower with a loading door on the first floor and a two-level segmental arch arcade on the ground floor. The central two-storey range is weatherboarded on its first floor, containing three windows. To the right is a single-storey and attic range with a wide segmental arch opening. The tower has a louvred ventilator on the ridge and a truncated chimney on its rear, southwest corner. An east-facing return displays three windows, and a tablet on the north front at second floor level is inscribed "CH.1862," signifying Caleb Hitch, son of Caleb Hitch Snr., who patented the interlocking brick used extensively in the local area.

Inside the tower, cast iron columns support the floors, and a king-post roof sits above the west range. The brewery was occupied by William Wickham Ltd. in the 1880s.
