Description
North Maltings is a maltings building dating from the late 1840s. It is constructed of yellow stock brick in Flemish bond, with the east and west ends featuring weatherboarded timber framing. The roof is made of pantiles with gabled ends, and the kiln is clad in plain tiles. The structure is a long rectangular range that contains three maltings floors.
The south front has 12 bays, which include brick pilasters and small segmental brick arch windows. There are additional weatherboarded bays at the left and right ends, with the right (east) end featuring a projecting weatherboarded gabled hoist housing. At the west (left) end, there are truncated cone-shaped kilns on the north and south pitches of the roof, although the cowl is missing.
Inside, there is a 6-foot high tunnel beneath the kiln that runs across the building. The kiln retains its wire floors, which are supported on iron bars secured by 21 round oval tie-plates inscribed with "CHAS.WELLS WARE." Charles Wells manufactured ironwork for malting in Ware until around 1847.
