Description
The boundary wall and gate of Christ Church and the former Vicarage garden, built in 1858, is an embattled and buttressed structure made of Kentish ragstone. It runs approximately 85 meters along the east side of New Road, behind the footpath, and continues northward along the garden frontage of the Old Vicarage, which was demolished in 1963 when the land was redeveloped for Hanbury Close. The wall features offset caps and splayed copings. Originally, sections of cast-iron railing filled the embrasures, but these were removed during World War II for salvage. Additionally, a Gothic arched lamp holder and lantern over the footgate were also taken, although the cast-iron gate remains.
