Description

A range of three large maltings dating from the early 19th century, with later alterations to part of the complex. The buildings are constructed of yellow-grey brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with some areas colourwashed and others rendered. The north and south ranges have corrugated asbestos roofs. The maltings are three storeys high and each includes three floors, three double kilns, and malt stores at the east end. The north and centre maltings retain hoists or lucombs. The south and centre maltings are connected by an iron canopy spanning between the kilns. Each kiln is topped by a conical roof clad in old tiles, featuring rotating corrugated iron cowls with iron vanes and decorative motifs. The south range has been converted into an art centre and includes cast-iron circular tie plates bearing the name 'Chas. Wells Ware'.
