Description

The house at 1 Bluecoat Yard dates to the 16th century and was remodelled in the late 17th century. It is timber-framed and has a plastered, pebbledashed, and colourwashed exterior. The roof is tiled with a gabled casement dormer, and features a coved plaster eaves cornice. The building is two stories high with attics. There are three-light flush casement windows on both the ground and first floors, and a flush panelled door within an architrave surround, with a weatherboard head above it, on the left. The structure of the house predates the acquisition of the Bluecoat Yard buildings by Christ's Hospital in 1685, but the late 17th-century remodelling likely served as ‘nurse cottages’ for the school’s pupils, alongside numbers 2 and the newly built numbers 3-12. It shares its structural framework with the north bay of The Old Stables.
