Description

This is a block of ten almshouses, now used as five separate dwellings, dating from the 18th century. The building is timber-framed with white weatherboard cladding above a red brick sill. It has a steep hipped roof finished with dark tiles, originally thatched. The long, narrow block faces south. The almshouses were originally arranged in pairs, with five shared chimneys and ten boarded doors located away from the fireplaces. Each has a small, flush casement window with two lights and small panes of glass. The original paired arrangement has now been altered, with pairs of houses combined into larger dwellings. Local historical records suggest the almshouses were originally outbuildings to Standon Workhouse, which was disused following the passage of the Poor Law Act in 1834.
