Description

Knights Court is a manorial courthouse and schoolhouse dating from the 16th century or earlier. It was used as a school until around 1980 and is now divided into four houses. The building is constructed with a visible timber frame, incorporating close-studding and 19th-century herringbone red brick infill. A flint and brick base is present. There are two external lateral red brick chimneys on the south side, and the roof is covered with steep old red tiles, half-hipped at the ends. The building has two storeys and nine structural bays. A continuous jetty is visible on the north side, facing the churchyard. The windows are 2-light casements (renewed), set flush with bracketed sills and dripboards. The west gable features 19th-century mullioned transomed wood windows, with a 3-light window above a 5-light window, both having moulded sills. A central boarded door leads up five steps on the south side, featuring elaborate decorative hinges. A 19th-century eastern extension, which was used as a girls' school, is not considered to be of particular architectural interest.
