Description
The Essex Barn at Hunsdon Lodge Farm is an 18th-century barn located 3 metres northeast of the Big Black Barn. The barn features a timber frame and is weatherboarded, with a slated gabled roof. It has six bays and no aisles, facing south. There is a projecting gabled porch that is off-centre to the west, flanked by weatherboarded and slated lean-tos that end in a low gabled cross wing near the eastern corner. The north side has opposed double doors and high boarded doors. Above the lean-to to the east of the porch, there is a continuous ventilation slot. The structure includes unjowled posts with rails tennoned in line and long curved braces to the tie beams, along with a post at the centre of each gable end. This barn is a good example of a late timber-framed barn, specifically designed for its intended use. The lean-to sections on the south side are likely original, and there was once a long shelter shed that extended south from the eastern end of the south side. The barn is part of a picturesque group of tarred weatherboarded barns at Hunsdon Lodge Farm.
