Description

Causeway House is a house located in Braughing village, dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the late 17th century and possibly into the early 18th century. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, topped with steep old red tile roofs. It has a three-unit, central-chimney, lobby-entry plan and faces west. Originally, it was two storeys high, but an attic floor was added in the late 17th century, along with three gables on the front and a heightened gabled rear staircase tower. The central brick chimney likely replaced an earlier timber-framed chimney at that time, and the house was extended to the south by one bay.

Inside, the parlour at the northern end has a cellar beneath it, while the hall to the left of the entrance features a staircase rising from it. The external gable chimney on the north side replaced an earlier chimney on the rear wall, which is now a bay window. The house is two storeys with attics and has a west elevation that is three windows long, showcasing flush three-light leaded casements and small windows in the three gables. The entrance features a six-panel door flanked by fluted pilasters and topped with a gabled hood. The tall central chimney has grouped square shafts. The interior includes large open fireplaces, stop-chamfered beams, and a clasped-purlin roof with wind-braces. The southern extension has a butt-purlin roof construction with rafters tennoned into the purlins, and features a winding staircase in a turret.
