Description

Number 6 is a house that now serves as a meeting room, along with its forecourt wall. It dates from the 16th century or earlier, with a date of 1574 carved on the front, and was renovated in 1860. The building features an exposed timber frame with close-studding and red brick herringbone nogging, topped by a steep red tiled roof that has decorative banding of pointed tiles. The forecourt wall, made of red brick and knapped flint, was built in the 19th century and is linked to the house. Originally a hall house, it has two jettied, gabled crosswings that project to the front. There is a large external lateral chimney made of red brick, decorated with a diaper pattern and a stone shield dated 1860, which has two diagonal shafts. On the right side, there is a centrally placed arched wooden doorway with carved spandrels and a plank door, as well as a similar doorway into the left-hand crosswing. An additional large external chimney is located at the east end, also with diagonal shafts. The front gables have cusped pierced bargeboards, and both wings are hipped at the rear. The building features bracketed oriel windows with minimal projection on both floors, which include 2- and 3-light cast iron casements with elongated lozenge panels. It was renovated in the 19th century to function as a village school.
