The Coach House Next To The West Side Of Abbotts Lane

The Coach House next to the west side of Abbotts Lane is a coach house that has been converted into a house, built in 1899 for G S Pawle Esq by H A Pelly. It features grey brick with slate roofs and is designed in a U-shaped layout, facing north. The central block is two storeys high with a hipped roof and overhanging eaves. There are one-storey pitched roof gabled wings to the east and west, which are of different widths. The west wing is domestic in character, featuring a large central chimney and windows. The east wing includes a square louvred cupola with a moulded cornice, a pyramid roof, and an ornamental wrought iron vane. The north side showcases decorative Arts and Crafts bargeboards with collar and grid infill. A similar bargeboard adorns the larger pitched slate roof over the yard, which projects to the north. The building also has segmental yellow gauged arches and wooden casement windows with mullions. The coach house doorways have been glazed as part of its conversion into a house. This picturesque stable group is of special architectural interest and is part of the group around Ash View Rest Home within the Conservation Area, contributing to its group value.
