Description

The Lodge is a late 19th-century dairy with a studio above, now used as a house. It was built for G S Pawle and was likely designed by H A Pelly. The building is constructed of grey brick, colourwashed white, and has a tiled roof with bands of plain and fishscale tiles. It’s a large, square building with 1.5 storeys, originally designed as an ornamental dairy with a studio above for the Pawle family, built when the stables and coach-house were removed to the west of Abbotts Lane.

The north-facing front has a three-window design, with a two-light mullioned casement window flanked by three-light windows, all under segmental arches. The corners are bevelled, and the steep hipped roof is supported by double scrolled wooden brackets springing from moulded corbels. The roof features two large gabled dormers with heavy bargeboards, and a stepped arrangement of small square lights, punctuated by a moulded collar between shaped brackets supporting the dormer wall plate ends. A rooflight on the upper slope provides additional light to the studio. On the east side are three round arched Diocletian windows, two with glazed doors. The south side has smaller windows and one similar dormer. A double-glazed door is set within a round arched opening on the west side, with a modern glazed porch in front. The building is an example of the Arts and Crafts style, considered of special architectural interest. It is part of a group including the former Walnut Tree House (Ash View Rest Home) to the west, and is included on the list for group value.
