Description
The Memorial Hall at Bishops Stortford College is a single-storey, detached building constructed in 1922 by Clough Williams Ellis. It features a modified classical style, built from yellow brick with Portland stone dressings, and has a steeply pitched pantiled roof topped with a central copper-covered cupola. The long south side is adorned with an order of brick pilasters that have stone bases and an entablature, which is crowned by a pair of urns. There are four tall, square-headed windows, flanked by groups of three round-arched openings with circular windows above them.
On the east front, paired stone pilasters frame a two-columned Doric portico, in antis, which includes three-light windows. The upper part is elaborately designed with a central circular window, flanked by pairs of urns and consoles. The opposite end of the building is simpler in design. Inside, there is an open vestibule that is flanked by small compartments, one of which contains a stair leading to a gallery above. Additionally, there is a shaped stage-organ compartment that projects from the centre of the north side.
