Description

This is a 17th-century and later former malthouse and stables, subsequently converted into a billiard room and servants’ accommodation during the mid-to-late 19th century. It is situated at an angle to the street, and is part of the Vyse Court estate. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof. It is single-storied. The west-facing elevation, overlooking the garden of Vyse Court, features a large mullioned and transomed bay window on its northern side and two Gothic arched doorways on its southern side, one elaborately carved with foliage, birds, and animals. Other windows are in a Tudor style. The parapet incorporates flint panels, and a flat-roofed ventilator is present at the north end.

Inside, the large former billiard room has a Doric screen on the south side and a stuccoed beam ceiling decorated with fruit and flower motifs. The walls are lined with reused 17th-century scratch-moulded oak panelling. At the north end, a Jacobean fireplace features strapwork Ionic pilasters, an ovolo cornice, and a two-field overmantel with rich strapwork and an entablature.
