Description

No 105 is a house located on Town Lane in Benington, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. It is an open hall house with a later addition at the south end. The structure features a timber frame set on a renewed brick plinth and is roughcast with a steep old red tile roof. This long, two-storey house faces west and has a middle section that was originally open to the roof, showcasing smoke-blackened rafters. The north end is storied and dates from the same period, while the south bay is an addition.

The house has two central chimneys, one cruciform and the other T-shaped. Its façade is balanced with five windows, featuring two-light casement windows above and three-light windows below. There are two hipped, tiled porches, one of which has been infilled. The rear of the house includes a gabled stair tower, and the wall timbers are exposed inside the rear outshut. The construction includes close-studding with curved tension bracing and wind braces in the side purlin roof.

On the first floor, there is a four-light diamond mullioned window with a renewed sliding shutter. The ground floor features lengths of early 14th-century moulded beams that have been reused as mantels, adorned with carved foliage and shields bearing the de Benetade arms, likely sourced from the restoration of the chancel of St Peter's parish church in the 19th century.
