Description

This is a 17th century timber-frame house located on Town Lane in Bennington. The timber frame is covered with stucco and roughcast, with exposed studding visible in the eastern gable. The steep red tile roof features two gabled dormers. A central chimney is plastered. The house has one and a half storeys and a two-cell, central-chimney, lobby-entry plan, facing north onto the roadside. The symmetrical front has two windows and a central boarded door sheltered by a small flat hood. The dormers have two-light casement windows, while the ground floor has three-light casement windows. A gabled stair turret is located at the rear, aligned with the chimney.

Inside, the western half of the house has a heavy crossbeam and a large fireplace with an inserted grate. The eastern half features an axial beam. Other interior details include old doors with strap hinges, a winding stair, exposed timbering on the upper floor, and a roof constructed with clasped purlins. Formerly operating as the Old Red Lion public house.
