Description
House. Dating back to the 16th century, this was originally a hall-house. A one-storey west extension, along with an inserted chimney and floor, were added in the 17th century. A matching porch was constructed in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed with a red brick sill, plastered to the west of the porch, and features fan-patterned pargeting and plain window margins. It has steep half-hipped thatched roofs, including eyebrow dormers on both the front and back of the chamber above the hall, and another to the west of the porch. The west part has a hipped thatched roof.
Originally a three-cell hall-house facing south, it was converted in the 17th century to a central-chimney, lobby-entry plan with a parlour at the east end, which remained unheated until an 18th-century red brick external gable chimney was added. The central chimney likely replaced a screens passage. The exterior includes a large gabled porch with two windows on each side and two dormers.
Inside, the structure reveals exposed timber framing in the walls and floors featuring close-studding. There are axial floor-beams at each end of the house, alongside a chamfered cross-beam with run-out stops inserted in the hall. The roof is a clasped-purlin design, complete with wind-braces, and tie-beams cut and braced to the floor structure.
