Description
Shipwrights and Shipwrights Cottage is a house that has been divided into two homes. It dates from the 16th century or earlier, featuring a gabled crosswing, while the western range was rebuilt around 1700 and the southeast wing was added later. The building has a timber frame that is plastered, with steep thatched roofs. The western gable end is covered in plastered brick, and the southeast wing is made of plastered brick with a hipped roof.
The original two-storey crosswing has been incorporated into a taller two-storey house with a central chimney and a lobby entry facing north, which has a half-hipped western gable. The crosswing and southeast wing were later separated to create another house, Shipwrights, which has a small porch added to the front of the gabled wing.
An external chimney on the eastern side serves the crosswing, which features a three-light flush casement window on each floor of the northern gable. The western range has two windows on each floor, also with three-light flush casement windows. The central door is half-glazed and is located under a gabled porch supported by posts. Inside the crosswing, there is an open fireplace and heavy joists, which may indicate that it was originally jettied at the front.
