Description
The barn at Upp Hall, located 40 meters northwest of the mansion, dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring black brick diaper patterns. The barn has a steep old red tile roof with gable parapets supported by corbelled kneelers. This exceptionally large unaisled barn, which faces south, is about 43 meters long and consists of 10 bays. It originally had two large 4-centred arched cart entrances in the front and rear walls, although only the southeast opening remains, while the others have been narrowed or blocked. There was also a wing at the west end of the south side, which is now gone.
The barn includes two rows of vent slits, some with arched heads and others with straight heads, measuring 200mm wide and splayed inside with segmental rere arches. The roof structure is notable for its hybrid style, featuring a clasped-purlin upper tier with collars and curved wind braces, and a butt-purlin lower tier with queen-struts and curved wind braces. Strainer collars are present at mid-bay between the upper purlins, and flat-laid rafters pass over the butt-purlin, supported by cambered tie beams.
The eastern end of the barn was converted into a chapel in the 19th century, which includes a moulded wooden pointed doorway on the south side. Additionally, there are two unusual wall recesses on the outside of the north wall. The barn is described by Pevsner as "more spectacular than the house."
