Description

Friars House is a house dating back to the 16th century, with alterations in the 18th century and an extension in the late 19th century, as marked by "HK 1882" on the grey brickwork at the east end. The timber frame is plastered, with the ground floor on the west half faced in 18th-century red brick and on the east half in grey brick. The roof is steeply pitched with old red tiles. Originally a 3-unit, lobby-entry, central chimney house facing north, it was enlarged at the east service end in the 19th century. A red brick gable chimney, built in the 18th century, is located on the west side of the house to heat the parlour. The north front has a regular arrangement of four windows on each floor, and a gabled enclosed porch. The south side, facing the road, has three windows to the upper floor and twin rectangular bay windows linked by a hipped tiled roof. The windows are flush-faced casements with leaded glass. Inside, there are large open fireplaces in the central chimney, axial beams, and a 4-centred hollow chamfered doorway to the parlour.
