Description
Deas Farm is a 15th-century open hall house that underwent modifications in the early 17th century, with a northern crosswing re-roofed along the axis of the house in the late 17th century. The building features a timber frame covered in roughcast and has an old red tile roof. It is one and a half storeys tall, with a three-cell layout and a central chimney located a third of the way from the south end, along with a 19th-century external gable chimney at the north end. Originally, the interior was open to the roof, consisting of a hall, a service room to the south, and a parlour to the north, which is framed transversely with two bays. The parlour has a four-light diamond mullioned window on its rear wall. The central chimney is situated at the lower end of the hall, with a winding stair accessed from the hall. The west front has four windows, including two gabled dormers positioned in the middle and at the south end. Most windows are flush casement, except for a flush box sash window to the left of the door. The red brick chimney is in a T-plan. Inside, the walls are exposed with close-studding, and there is a chamfered axial beam in the hall supported by the fireplace lintel. The narrow service end features exposed axial joists at a lower floor level, while the parlour has thin exposed joists. The rear wallplate at the south end shows an edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts. The hall roof has a single purlin on each slope, while the north end, which was re-roofed later, has two purlins.
