Description
Gatesbury is a miller's house dating from the early 17th century. It features a timber frame on a painted brick sill, with a roughcast exterior and a steep old red tile roof. The south end wall includes a small two-storey extension, and there is a single-storey rear wing made of painted 19th-century brick, both with steep tile roofs. The house has a two-cell, central-chimney lobby-entry plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic, facing east. The symmetrical front has two windows on each floor and a central door, all with smooth plaster margins. The windows are flush box sash style with moulded surrounds and 8/8 panes. The entrance features a four-panel half-glazed door that is accessed by three steps, set in a moulded eared surround with a moulded flat hood supported by projecting shaped brackets. A large panelled square chimney is centrally located, serving the ground floor and the chamber above the northern part of the house. Inside, there are exposed axial beams and square joists, and the roof structure is a clasped-purlin design.
